This is the first in a series of semantic analysis jupyter notebooks for the Sites & Stories research project funded by National Science Foundation. The notebook sets up a data ingest pipeline and analyzes the collection of information using NLP approaches from bibliometric and scientometric approaches. The "Science Backbone" was developed by the research community in Library and Information Sciences over the course of about 50 years to map the relationships between academic research communities using peer reviewed literature sources. Nodes represent the topics of research and their place on the backbone visualization are based on the semantic and linquistic similarities of language used to describe the field in peer reviewed literature. Nodes are sized by frequency of occurence in the literature and the edges between nodes reflect the interactions between disciplines or topics.
This analytical notebook evaluates a corpora and highlights the nodes that occur in the collection of information as an overlay on top of the network visualization of the science backbone.
The full collection of notebooks is stored on DataX and will become available as a computational cookbook with DOI on May 10, 2026 (https://portals.tapis.io/v3/files/postits/redeem/40c6207f-c40e-40ba-91a6-18847a57925e-010)
