vbd-disease-risk-hotspots-in-texas

Award-winning spatial analysis mapping predicted vector-borne disease (VBD) risk hotspots across Texas under current and future climate. Texas's expansive subtropical climate makes it a high-risk zone for localized VBD transmission; identifying geographic risk hotspots supports public-health planning, prioritization of healthcare infrastructure, and rapid mobilization of vector-management interventions. Under projected climate change, shifts in temperature thresholds and precipitation are expected to expand viable vector habitats, increasing environmental suitability statewide and raising the future likelihood of multi-vector intersection.\n\nMethods. High-resolution bioclimatic data (CHELSA) were integrated with multi-species occurrence records (GBIF) using species distribution modeling in Biomod2 (R) to delineate habitat suitability under a current baseline and a future climate projection (SSP3-7.0). Remote-sensing imagery (Google Imagery) and ArcGIS Pro were used for cartography and spatial analysis.\n\nRecognition. Received the Award for Outstanding Spatial Analysis at the Esri User Conference 2026 Map Gallery.\n\nProject context. Produced by the Feria Lab (UTRGV) in connection with the NASA MUREP ESSR VITAL cooperative agreement, and acknowledges Planet Texas 2050 (PT2050).
